An apple (or two) a day…. January 7, 2009

Week one was insanely easy. I think I probably already drink 36 oz (1 liter) of water daily, and didn’t realize it. I usually ended up drinking about 1 1/2 liters per day. But I wanted to start sloooowly, and do something that would be easy. Because I want this to be a lifelong change I’m not going to just jump right in; it would never last and The Hunk wouldn’t go for it either. I think gradual is best. The Hunk himself has been doing remarkably well. He’s been faithfully filling and taking his water bottle with him to work, and has drank at least 1 liter of water per day! I have found myself wanting water more, craving it almost. It’s really been the only thing I’ve been drinking and it’s been very satisfying.

This week we are going to move away from water and onto fruit (Don’t worry we’ll come back to the water). I figure fruit is a good thing to tackle next because it’s sweet, so it will be pretty easy for most people to start eating–assuming they don’t already. We’re going to focus on water and fruit for the first few weeks here and then we will start getting into the vegetables and whole grains  (Baby steps to the water….baby steps to the fruit…..baby steps to the veggies……name that movie! Not an exact quote, and Hunk you cannot answer!).

Here are some things you can read on fruit consumption:

The Nutrition Source-all about vegetables and fruit–Harvard

Very interesting read on the benefits of veggies and fruits

How much? (Canada’s food guide)

There is a handy chart here that breaks down how much you should be eating acording to your age and sex. From age 2-51+.

What is a serving? (Canada’s food guide)

Fruit:

  • 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned.
  • 1 piece of fruit

The goal for this week is:

Eat at least two servings of fruit per day

So that means,  1 cup of cut up fruit, or 2 pieces of fruit, or 1 piece of fruit and 1/2 cup cut up fruit, or–I think you get the picture. I would also add that the piece of fruit should be a small piece, otherwise it would count for more than a serving–you’ll have to kind of gauge that yourself.

Ideally you would eat either fruit serving instead of something bad for you. For example: instead of eating a bowl of ice cream in the evening when you’re watching T.V.– eat a serving of fruit! Or instead of eating some sugary over-processed cereal for breakfast–eat a serving of fruit!

[a little bit of housekeeping: I think I am going to switch the start day to Monday. It is really weird to start a weekly goal on a Thursday–does anyone else agree? I wanted to start on January 1st which is why it is Thursdays. I think it will be less confusing if each week starts on a normal day like Monday! So, this weeks goal will be pretty short. But since it’s an easy one I think that will be okay! ]

Healthy eating! And keep drinking that water!
